Hi, I’m Jamie and this is the story of why I went from an iPhone to a brick – well, an “Alcatel One Touch” to be precise!
One of the first steps I took to become a minimalist traveller was getting a new phone.
In this day and age, almost everyone either has a smart-phone or a tablet of some kind, and the majority of people have both. I was no different. I had an iPhone and an iPad and for so long, this didn’t bother me – apart from the fact that I don’t really like Apple but was still, somehow dependent on them (a story for another day).
As I started to learn more about minimalism and how I could use it to help me travel, I started to think about what “stuff” I needed and what stuff I could do without.
I realised that my iPad could actually do everything that my phone could do.
For all the apps you can download to your phone these days, the most underappreciated and – lets face it – the only one you really need is “phone”.
So, armed with this epiphany I set out to find a phone that met this most basic need.
Long story short, I found one for £0.79 ($1 ish)! It does everything I need a phone to do and, as a result, I’m saving about £200 per year which is going straight into the travel fund!
What could you do if you had an extra £200 to spend each year?
Most people will tell you that they cannot live without their smart-phone; with the constant social media updates and latest trends, people revolve their entire life around this little device.
Why not just take a moment to stop and really think. Think about what your priorities and principles are. Be brutally honest and ask yourself, “Do I really need this?”.
We live in a world of excess. A world where there are new iPhones out every year, new fashion trends every week; a world where people are obsessed with owning more and end up “living” less.
Eliminate the unnecessary excess and gain a sense of clarity about what’s really important and what matters most to you.
