New York is a place like no other, and somewhere that’s always on my list of places I want to go. I’ve been lucky enough to go more than once but each time I leave, I already want to go back. You can definitely pack a lot of things in, even if you’re only there for a short time, so I’m going to list just a few things to do and places to go when spending a weekend in the infamous urban jungle.
When you think of New York, the bright lights of Times Square often spring to mind. This well-known tourist destination is a must when visiting the city. Even just standing in the middle of it you feel like you’re in a movie – it’s definitely a great place to take some holiday snaps. And while you’re there, you can do some shopping or eating with many shops and well known restaurants lining the perimeter of the square.
Empire State Building and Rockefeller Centre
One of the best ways to see the whole city is to go to the top of these iconic buildings. Whether you go at night or in the day, the views are truly breathtaking. From the ‘top of the Rock’ you get the most incredible view of the Empire State Building and this really makes for amazing photos. The view from the top of the Empire State is one you’ll never forget – you’re looking down on some of the highest skyscrapers and everyone on the ground look like ants. Even if you’re not so good with heights, a trip to the top of these landmarks is definitely worth it just for the picture you will get.
Central Park is a really beautiful place and when you’re there you can truly forget that you are in the middle of one of the biggest and busiest cities in the world. It is so huge that you could spend an entire day there. As you wander around the trees and lakes, you will soon realise that you recognise a lot of it from scenes in your favourite movies and TV shows. I would highly recommend a visit to this wonderful part of the city even if you’re there for a couple of days.
A Sports Game
Going to a sports game is a great way to experience the incredible atmosphere of this great city. A trip to Madison Square Garden to see a basketball game is an excellent experience, even for non-basketball fans. I can guarantee you’ll be swept up into the fast pace and excitement of this game. An alternative would be to go and see a baseball game, which is another great experience. I’d never seen baseball but when I went to a Yankee’s game, I got really into it and had a great time.A Broadway Show
A Broadway Show
This is similar to the sports game, in that you don’t need to be a huge musical theatre fan to enjoy a Broadway show. With so many shows to choose from there will definitely be one for everyone. There is such a wonderful atmosphere at these shows, with hundreds of people all dressed up to see something truly incredible – the talent in Broadway shows is really undeniable.
You will never struggle to find great food in New York, with thousands of restaurants and food carts. From some of the best pizza you’ll have to classic American diner burgers and pretzels to frozen yogurt, this city really does have everything and really is a great destination for food lovers. If you want to know about other travel destinations for lovers of food, check out our other post here.
If you’re going to New York these are just a few of the things you could do and see while you’re there. Of course, in this vast and bustling city there are so so many more things to do so you’ll just need to keep going back!
