There are just limitless road trip ideas when it comes to different routes and destinations. If your bucket list isn’t already long enough, you should definitely think about adding some of these road trip adventures to it!
Let’s check out the list!
1. The North Coast 500, Scotland
Being a Scotland native, I felt I had to put this one first!
Starting in Inverness and continuing round the entire northern coast of Scotland, this 500 mile round trip contains some of the most stunning scenery you can find. Amazing stretches of coastline and beaches as well as historic castles. For all you alcohol fans, there will also be plenty of whiskey drinking opportunities along the way!
In order to fully appreciate this experience, allow up to 2 weeks to complete this road trip. If you don’t want to make as many stops, a week will be fine.
2. The Causeway Coastal Route, Northern Ireland
This road trip is quite short (just a few days) but the scenery along the way is pretty mesmerizing!
Obviously, the Giant’s Causeway is the main attraction on this route, but you can also visit some of the filming locations of Game of Thrones if that’s also your thing.
3. The Wild Atlantic Way, Ireland
Yes, Ireland has not one, but two amazing road trips!
The Wild Atlantic Way runs up the entire west coast and is actually the longest coastal road trip in the world!
Taking you about 3 weeks to complete the whole thing, there is definitely plenty to experience.
4. Route 66, USA
Probably one of the most famous road trip routes in the world, Route 66 is the famous road that stretches from Chicago to LA. Although the original Route 66 has been decommissioned and is now referred to as “Historic Route 66”, some portions of it have been turned into highways.
Over the years, it has retained its fame and reputation as the ultimate American road trip.
The time it takes to complete this road trip really varies, depending on how much of the route you want to do and where you want to stop off. The entire thing is over 2000 miles long!

5. San Francisco to Los Angeles, USA
For this one, don’t just go directly from San Fran to LA, take plenty of detours in between!
You can venture through some of the best cities in the States, as well as some of the most beautiful national parks. You could even make a stop off at the Grand Canyon.
All in all, this should take a couple of weeks, maybe more if you take extra detours.
6. Hana Highway, Hawaii
This is the shortest road trip on the list, only taking a day, but it’s still definitely worth doing.
This road takes you round the north coast of the island, over a total of 59 bridges, with plenty of scenic stopping points along the way.
7. The Canadian Arctic Road Trip, Canada
Ideal for those with a keen sense of adventure!
The Dempster Highway, a single road over 400 miles long is what takes you into the remote environment of the Arctic.
Allow yourself between a few days and a week to complete this one.
8. The Ring Road, Iceland
This one circles the whole of Iceland and is perfect for those who want to explore every corner of this epic country.
If you want to fully experience the wonders of Iceland, allow at least two weeks for this road trip.
*Fun Fact: Iceland is the only country without a military!
9. Route 62, South Africa
This 450 (ish) mile long road trip going from Cape Town to Port Elizabeth is ideal if you have more than one designated driver, given that there are 65 wineries along the way.
Don’t worry, there’s also plenty of non-alcoholic related stuff to do! Beautiful scenery, mountain hiking trails and Ostrich riding are just a few of the things on the itinerary on this route.
10. The South Island, New Zealand
This one’s on my bucket list for sure.
New Zealand seems like the ideal place to travel around at your own pace, exploring every part of the island. With the captivating natural landscapes, the mountains and all the cool things to do, you could easily spend a month touring the island.
Also, in their winter (summer in the northern hemisphere) there is some world class skiing resorts as well!
11. Mongol Rally
This one’s a little different. There is no one set route.
Basically, you start in London, England and make your way to Mongolia. You choose your own route and take as long as you want.
The point of the Mongol Rally is that it is done for charity. This is one we’re definitely planning on doing at some point in the future.

This road trip can take up to six months to complete and obviously, some of the main highlights will be the Pyramids of Egypt, the River Nile and African Safari just to name a few.
