When I came to Japan, initially it was only meant to be for a gap year. After it was over, I was going to come back home and go to university like you’re “meant to”. But once I got out here, I slowly became more and more obsessed with the idea of turning this gap year into something bigger, travelling to more places, exploring and discovering new things about the world and about myself.
So, I chose not to go home but instead started working on Gaijin Crew. I thought “what better way to fund my travelling than to write about travelling?”
There are so many reasons why this can be an awesome thing to do and I’m going to share my top 10 with you guys today!
1. No More 9-5
This was one of the main motivators for me!
Not much seemed worse than being stuck in a job I hated and didn’t serve much of a purpose to anyone.
I didn’t want to spend my life counting down the days until my next holiday or day off.
Learning to make a living from travelling means that you can say “bye-bye” to the constraints of the 9-5 world. You can learn to live how you want, where you want and work on what you want when you want!
2. No Large Payments
By “large payments” I’m talking about things like mortgages and car payments and things like that.
If you’re spending most of your time on the road, you’re not going to have much need for a house or car.
This is a great philosophy to live by and chances are, you will be happier because of it.
3. Your Work Can Fund What You Do
I already touched on this earlier but it’s so true!
Being a travel writer or a photographer, or any kind of freelance job gives you the freedom to do your work from wherever you want.
This is especially the case if your work is travel related. In order to produce good content, you must travel. In order to travel, you must produce good content. It’s a self-fulfilling process.
4. Variety is the Spice of Life
It’s boring being stuck in the same place forever, right?
If you’re travelling around most of the time, it’s almost impossible to get bored. You’re always in new places, trying new things and meeting new people.
5. Show Off Your Photography Skills
Whether this is your way of making a living, or it’s just a passion you have, it’s safe to say that a life of travel is the perfect way to work on your photography skills, as well as show off your skills with some stunning shots.
You will blow people away with your Instagram account!
6. Educate Yourself
There is no better teacher in life than experience.
So, using that logic, the more you experience, the more you learn.
When you travel, the learning opportunities are abundant! Whether you want to learn a new language or if you want to learn about a different culture or the history of a different country.
7. Meet New People
You will meet some incredible people on your adventures!
A lot of the racial problems we have in the world stem from ignorance. This lack of knowledge about other cultures is easily solved by going to new places and experiencing new cultures.
You may meet friends for life, future business partners or you may even find your future wife/husband!
8. Live on Your Own Terms
When you travel full time, you are most likely your own boss.
That means you work on your own time. You decide what you work on, who you work with and – most importantly – you can work wherever you want!
9. Stories to Tell
If you travel the world for a living, you will make some incredible memories and have some unbelievable stories to tell.
You will hold onto these memories for your entire life and you may even be able to inspire others to live their travelling dreams with some of your stories!
10. No Regrets
When you die, you don’t want to have any regrets.
You want to have everything ticked off your bucket list. You will only achieve that if you decide to live the life you want to live, not the life that others think you should live.
That’s all for today guys!
Remember, work hard, live more!
