One thing you can’t really avoid when travelling is long flights. They can be boring, tiring and even daunting for some people. This post will give you a few great activities to keep you occupied on your journey and will hopefully make the time fly by (pun intended). Before reading this post, be sure to check out our packing tips post so you know what to bring with you on your long flights!
During long flights, watching a movie or two is one of the best ways to pass time while doing something enjoyable. Most planes on long flights have built in screens on the back of your seat with a wide variety of films and TV shows, with something for everyone. Be sure to make the most of this service provided, as it may prevent intense boredom from setting in.
Alternatively, if the plane doesn’t have this built-in feature then you can do it yourself by downloading a movie or TV show onto your phone or tablet before the flight. This way, all you need to do is plug in your earphones, sit back and enjoy your favourite film. You can even look a little smug, seeing other people bored out of their skulls because they didn’t come prepared like you. If you want some recommendations of movies to download, head over to our great travel films post here.
Similar to movies, a great tip is to make a playlist of your favourite tunes before you board the plane so when you get on, you can just plug in and enjoy. This will make time go surprisingly quickly and it can be great fun going through new songs, or old classics you haven’t heard in ages. For this reason, earphones are a must to pack with you! If you’re struggling to think of songs to add, check out our roadtrip playlist post here for some inspiration.
It’s always good to come prepared with lots of games and fun apps downloaded on your phone or tablet. Not only is this a good idea for parents travelling with small children to keep them entertained, it’s also a good way of doing something with your hands if you’re getting bored or restless. Card game apps are especially good at passing time as they get you brain working and you can really get into them.
Another great way to spend the hours on a plane is to get lost in the world of books. Whether it’s an old favourite or a new one you’ve been meaning to read for ages, reading is not only a great way to pass the time, but also a brilliant way to kick of your holiday reading. A great tip for this to save room in your hand luggage is to get an e-reader or download books onto your phone. This way you can have a wide variety of books to choose from without taking up loads of room in your bag; not to mention this will make it much lighter.
Sitting on a plane is a great time to get some work done. It’s a great use of time as well as making time hopefully go more quickly on the plane. If you get a lot done during these free hours, you will really thank yourself when you arrive at your destination. It’s the perfect time to finish last bits before a nice relaxing holiday, or an equally great time to prepare work if it’s a business trip you’re going on. For travel bloggers like us, you really couldn’t get a greater time to edit some blog posts and stay ahead of the game.
I know this is something a lot of people struggle to do on flights due to light and noise, but if you can, sleeping is another of the best ways to make the time go by very quickly. A few things you should pack to help you sleep are ear plugs, and eye mask and a travel neck pillow. These will allow you to block out all the lights and background noise as much as possible and will hopefully make it easier for you to get to sleep. Trust me, it’s worth it – you feel like you’ve blinked and you’ve landed again. It’s especially good to remember these sleep accessories on a night flight when you should really make sure you get some shut-eye.
These activities and tips should keep you entertained on a long flight and hopefully make the time go much more quickly.
