Becoming a traveller and a digital nomad was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. Most people who do this will tell you the same thing. Travel teaches more life lessons than just about any other experience out there. It teaches us more about the world, more about life and more about ourselves.
Lesson #1: Screw Social Convention
As soon as you start going to school, the expectation is to finish school, head to university, get a job and then retire (at least it was for me).
Excuse me, but f*** that!
That may be what some people aspire to do, but it is – in no way – suited to everyone.
Now, I was a “decent” student in school. I did well in my exams and was all set to go off to uni. But I realise that I was only following this path because it’s “what you do” and I hadn’t questioned it until then. I took a good look at things and decided that I didn’t want to go the conventional route.
I scrapped social convention and headed off to Japan for a year. This was the right decision for so many reasons. I met my girlfriend out there, and I also developed my love for travel. It ignited my wanderlust.
Since making this decision, I haven’t felt a singe ounce of regret.
So, if you’re not the most academic, or you just straight up don’t like school, DO NOT feel pressured to follow the conventional route. Instead, make your own route.
Lots of people who go the conventional route will complain about how crappy their job is and how they can’t wait for their one holiday of the year. Where as those who dare to think differently and venture into the unknown, return with no regret, just new-found knowledge, experience and passion for life.
Lesson #2: Do What You Love
Everyone has a passion for something. Find yours and pursue it.
If you love writing, become a writer or a blogger. If you love photography, become a photographer. How about becoming a filmmaker, or a chef, or a sports star or just about anything else.
It’s never been more possible to chase these dreams and aspirations. If other people can do it, why not you?
These days, people get too caught up in having a career, that they forget what their true passions are and they lose track of what’s important in life.
Lesson #3: Money isn’t what’s Important
I could have chosen to take a different route in life, one that would result in a career and a substantial income, but at what cost? It would’ve involved sacrificing my real dreams as well as any chance I had at achieving them.
People say you need to be rich to travel. If that’s true then how have I (as well as thousands and thousands of others) been able to do so without having a great deal of money. It’s about being smart and making the right decisions.
It’s a bunch of BS whenever someone says they want to be a millionaire. They actually want the lifestyle they think only millionaires can achieve. Instead of focusing on this nonsense, focus on the things that are most important to you, work on what you love and what makes you feel fulfilled. Do that, become great at it and the money will come as a result.
Lesson #4: Knowledge is Power
It is true that we have knowledge at our fingertips these days with the advancement of technology and the Internet. You can find out just about anything by Googling it. However, those of us who do not travel – those who stay tucked away in one tiny corner of the globe – remain ignorant to the world and other walks of life.
As I’ve said, the best teacher in life is experience and travel provides us with a whole lot of that! It opens your mind to things that would remain closed otherwise.
Lesson #5: It’s Damn Fun!
Pushing all of that other stuff aside, there is but one driving force behind why we travel. We travel because it’s awesome!
The opportunity to meet new people, learn new things and see new places is just too good to pass up.
Don’t give in to fear or doubt. Avoid making the mistakes that I – as well as countless other travellers – have made before.
Just go for it!
Nothing is more fulfilling.
Nothing is more rewarding.
Nothing is more fun.
